Softball Player from James Madison University, Lauren Bernett Dies at Age 20

Heart-wrenching news from Virginia came on Tuesday, 26 April 2022, as a standout softball player for James Madison University left this world. Lauren Bernett was just 20 at the time of her untimely demise.

James Madison University announced Lauren’s death via a joint statement. However, her actual cause of death still remains a mystery as of now.

The University’s President Jonathan Alger and Athletic Director Jeff Bourne spoke on the devastating situation stating,

Our hearts are aching, hearing the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes. Lauren Bernett was a high-achieving member of our softball team and a great ambassador of JMU and our athletics program.

We are a tight family. We are grateful that Lauren has been part of our JMU Athletics community and will always consider her to be a Duke. We will miss her dearly.

Meanwhile, James Madison University’s Softball team passed their condolences to the deceased athlete via their Twitter account.

Likewise, James Madison Athletics also passed their love and support to Lauren’s family via their Twitter handle. They wrote,

The JMU family is devastated to have lost one of our own. All our love and support are with Lauren’s family, her @JMUSoftball community and all those who knew her.

The prominent softball catcher helped her school to a historic run in the 2021 Women’s College World Series. As a freshman in 2021, Lauren played 43 games as the Dukes. She was batting .366 this season with 9 home runs.

Lauren was just named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Week a day before her sudden death.  The sophomore catcher received the honor on 25 April 2022, Monday, after going 7-for-9 with seven RBIs and four runs scored, including a home run.

At the time of her death, Lauren was third on the Dukes team in home runs and second in RBIs. As far as we can say, investigations are going on to find out her actual cause of death.

Lauren Bernett was born in 2001 in the small town of McDonald, Pennsylvania, the United States. The 20-year-old had an American nationality and her ethnicity was white.

She was survived by her parents, Scott Bernett and Kim Bernett. Besides, Lauren grew up with her two brothers and two sisters.

Lauren’s mother, Kim, was also a softball player. She played at Washington and Jefferson College.

About 5 feet and 5 inches or 1.65 meters tall in height, Lauren previously played high school softball at South Fayette. She was majoring in Biology at the time of her unfortunate death.
